A Notice of Sidewalk Violation from NYC DOT means an inspector has found a defect in front of your Brooklyn property, such as lifted, broken or missing flags.

From the date on the certified mail receipt, or the day the notice is posted, owners have 75 days to make the repair before DOT can step in and bill them for it.

Root damage needs extra care. Owners of one- to three-family homes are not charged for damage caused solely by a City tree, and can ask NYC Parks to inspect through the Trees and Sidewalks program. Owners who do not qualify, or cannot wait, can hire a licensed contractor to repair it with a Parks Tree Work Permit and a DOT permit.
