Driveways and Curb Cuts in Brooklyn Historic Districts
Brooklyn has many designated historic districts, and most exterior changes to buildings in those districts need review by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
NYC DOT’s filing guidelines state that curb cuts located in a historic district, or serving a designated landmark, must be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The same DOT guidelines require NYC Parks approval when a curb cut will affect a sidewalk tree, and only allow curb cuts that lead to an authorized driveway, garage, parking lot, loading dock or drive-through. Curb cuts must also meet DOT specifications and are subject to approval from DOB, the Board of Standards and Appeals or City Planning.
